July 22 2019 Great Local Products!

Two of my favorite things are produced locally, I really want to share these great products that were developed by some wonderful folk! Support Local!
Rocky Meadows Lavender is a stunning, tranquil, lavender farm, located Indian River, owned and operated by super nice people, who hand craft a wide variety of lavender products,  artisan soaps, lotions etc. I particularly liked the lavender spearmint soap, abs LOVE their shampoo &  conditioner & lip balm. I hope to not have to use anything other! My lips were unhappy when I used "Chapstick" after being spoiled by Karas beautiful lip balm!  Now, the beeswax from NP's bees, from our farm, will be used in some of their products! Check them out on Facebook for a complete line of their products!

My other addiction are the Zucchini chips that are  hand crafted by a Holistic Nutritionist/Dad at From The Heart Snacks, Omemee, Vegan Spicy Cheddar and Vegan Sour Cream & Onion flavors. We can easily devour the whole bag of either flavor in one sitting!  The Kale chips are equally as delish and great crumbled overtop salads & stews. You will be delighted meeting this lovely young family and enjoying a variety of their healthful popsicles, salads and snacks. Ingredients are locally sourced whenever possible, including veggies from our farm! They can be found every Thurs at the Lakefield Farmers Market 9-2 and occasionally at the downtown Peterborough Market 8.30-2, or can be contacted at fromtheheartsnacks@gmail.com

It's looking like Spring!

One large chicken egg with the goose eggs for comparison!
It is officially spring, the birds are singing, the sap just started to run (we tapped one tree this year), our geese have started laying eggs (and 1 duck)and it's mucky almost everywhere Yay! For those who are starting their own seedlings, now is the time to start tomatoes, peppers, etc wait a few more weeks before starting any squash, cucumbers etc. I am usually quite eager to get into the garden so I love my little indoor "greenhouse" it helps us get a good head start on the season. Please feel free to message me, call or text 705 799 6794 for effective planting ideas, even small spaces can be productive! Beginners are very welcome!
Available now: Organic free range chicken eggs $3.00/dz, duck eggs $5.00 dz, goose eggs $1.00 each. 3 organic pasture raised turkeys, frozen 15 - 16 lbs, a few frozen chickens 4 - 5 lb average weight.

Canola Oil Chainsaw Hack

We heat our house with wood. We believe in proper woodsmanship, full utilization, and only harvesting trees that are dead. This season we have been using Canola Oil instead of bar oil to lubricate the chain. It does a great job, is much more cost effective and is environmentally friendly! Now if a tree falls in our hay field we can cut it up without worrying about any of our animals eating hay that could potentially be contaminated with petroleum products etc. Wildlife coming in contact are also benefited. And inevitably saw dust gets in eyes, mouth and ears and I would rather it be processed with harmless canola oil! So far, the only negative is that Canola Oil freezes at -11 so it and the chainsaw  must be kept above that. We learnt that lesson the hard way, but fortunately didn't damage anything.

Nov 12 2018 HONEY!

I can't believe that I have not mentioned before now, that, in the spring we met a super nice young man Noah, looking for farms to house his bees. We really enjoyed watching the bees fly around, knowing that they were doing so much to help ours, and all of our neighbors gardens! We planned and planted lots of extra flowers, in addition to the varieties that just flourish here. Noah came to winterize the hives yesterday and brought us a glorious gift of beautiful unpasteurized honey, it is stunning! I cannot describe how wonderful and healthful it tastes! I am looking forward to trying some recipes for honey candies amongst other things!
He does have limited quantities available for sale, I am going to be placing an order for some other people soon. Please call or text me 705 799 6794 to add your in.  $7.00 for 500g, $13.00 for 1Kg. Pails: 2Kg/$25, 3Kg/$35, 5Kg/$55, 7Kg/70.

Tomatillo are ready!

Tomatillo are ready! These are such an interesting fruit. The lantern grows first, then the fruit fills out inside. They were our experiment from about 5 years ago. In the past we did replant seeds but now we are at the point where they reseed and grow back, millions of them....
It's flavour lends itself quite easily to both sweet and savory dishes. I have done up real quick salsas: pop a bunch of them, onion, garlic, a hot pepper if you like, S&P and a shot of lemon juice into a food processor. Yum! I have even added some chick peas to the blender for more of a hummus type dip or spread. They add alot of extra flavour when fried up with whatever you use for taco filling, added to soups and stews, and they freeze well. I just take off the lantern, rinse, place in a freezer baggie and freeze. For sweet applications like jams, I follow the recipe for gooseberry jam but use brown raw sugar. Feel free to call or text me 705 799 6794 to place an order, or with any questions/suggestions for our growing season next year. I love growing my experiments, it adds a bit more fun to the season!
