DIY Raised bed

July 3 2018
We enjoy repurposing items, this soaker tub makes an excellent raised bed. I filled it using the Hugelkultur method. I call it my Hugeltub. The bottom layer is soaked punky wood and debris, the slow decomposition of wood boosts the soil over time and holds moisture like a sponge. Any open spaces can be stuffed with organic matter such as leaves, compost and grass clippings. Ideally, a mix of carbon rich browns, and nitrogen rich greens. I added a good 3 inch layer over the top of the wood. Then fill the bed up the rest of the way with soil, either plant right away or, for best results let it cure for a few months. I planted, right away, celery, arugula, and lettuce. Despite the drought that we have been experiencing this season the Hugeltub is thriving with minimal watering. This could be accomplished using any large vessel, hot tubs, shipping crates, preferably something that does provide some drainage.

DIY Poultry Brooder

We enjoy repurposing items found for free/cheap at auctions, yard sales and on kijiji. For this do-it-yourself poultry brooder project we used a skylight and some wood (we could build another 5 or more brooders with the amt of wood we got)we bought at auction for $11 total. We built the frame a bit smaller than the skylight so that it would fit on top like a lid. Other than the 2×4 frame any wood can be used to enclose. The heat lamp hangs on a top rack from an old bbq, also doubles as a screen to let in air and vent. We chicken wired in another run for their outdoor use once they are old enough to be away from the heat lamp. We always free range raise our animals, but when they are small they must be kept safe from predators, and our dog! He loves them so much he would trample them in his excitement!
